General Remarks

Dobcross
The canal continues along a narrow section to Wool Road Basin, Dobcross.  Here are former mill buildings converted to apartments and the Wool Road Transhipment Shed. While Standedge Tunnel was being constructed boats unloaded at this point, the cargoes being loaded onto trains of pack-horses which carried the goods across the Standedge moors to be loaded onto waiting boats at Marsden.

Diggle
The canal climbs up a series of locks towards Diggle, with the railway embankment to the right and open views across the steep-sided valley to the left. The locks on the Diggle flight are of interest as they have a single gate at both the head and tail end. The paddle gear and balance beams are on the off-side and a path also runs up this side of the locks.

Standedge
Non-boaters may now make a through passage of Standedge Tunnel. Tickets cost £6.00 per person. Boats do not run every day so anyone interested should contact (Tel: 01484 844298) Standedge Visitor Centre to check on times and available room. Westbound passages from Marsden tend to start around 8:30-9:00am and eastbound from Diggle around 12:30-1:00pm.

Prospective foot passengers may also want to use the hourly 184 bus service (Not Sundays) between Huddersfield Road, Diggle and Manchester Road, Marsden (See Timetable for 184 and other services).
