Nicholson Guides - The Current Editions

The most recent editions of the Guides to the Waterways were published on 3 March 2003, replacing those published three years earlier.

Each guide contains similar introductory material and information of use to boaters and others, including:

• Planning a cruise
• Using a lock and bridges
• Winding holes
• Boatyards and local services
• The history of each canal
• Places of interest
• Pubs and restaurants
• Opportunities for walking and cycling

HarperCollins describe the volumes as having practical spiral binding making the guide easy-to-use, a flap around the foredge clearly identifying the guide and providing for better display in retail outlets. They also comment, on their web site that "Rival publications cover one canal or canal-ring only. Nicholson guides have logical groupings of waterways: all recognised circular routes are contained within single editions."

Each of the guides cost £12.99, except Guide #8 which cost £8.99. This last one extends the coverage of the guides to include Scottish waterways. However, the waterways of the Broads and Fens, which used to feature in earlier editions of the guides, regretably, have not made a reappearance in this series.
